WSCIJ Leadership Formally Honours Justice Ayo Salami in Ilorin; Reaffirms Constitutional Mandate for Media Accountability

In its mission to appreciate and reinforce the convergence of judicial integrity and media accountability, the leadership of the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) has formally presented the Human Rights Defender Honorary Award to the former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami (Retd).

The presentation took place on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at Justice Salami’s residence in the Government Reserved Area (GRA), Ilorin, Kwara State The plaque was originally conferred during the WSCIJ’s 20th Anniversary and Awards ceremony in December 2025, where it was accepted on his behalf by Professor Ropo Sekoni, Chairman of the WSCIJ Board.

The award presentation was led by Dapo Olorunyomi, Founder of WSCIJ and Publisher of Premium Times, and Motunrayo Alaka, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The delegation honoured Justice Salami for his uncompromising contributions to justice and public accountability.

Speaking during the presentation, Mr. Olorunyomi described Justice Salami as a “symbol of courage and judicial independence,” noting that his legacy remains a foundational inspiration for those upholding the rule of law. He further clarified that the fundamental purpose of the WSCIJ is to provide a “legal basis” for journalism in Nigeria, rooted in Section 22 of the Nigerian Constitution, which mandates the media to hold power accountable.

Also speaking, Mrs. Motunrayo Alaka praised the retired Justice for his steadfast defence of human rights, particularly during his tenure as President of the Court of Appeal. “We selected Justice Ayo Salami for his consistency as a legal practitioner and his unwavering stand for justice—a stand that the vulnerable in society look toward,” Mrs. Alaka stated. She emphasised that while the Wole Soyinka Awards primarily celebrate courageous journalists, the Centre recognises that their work is bolstered by individuals in other sectors who demonstrate the same fortitude as the Centre.

In his response, Justice Salami expressed profound gratitude for the recognition. The eminent jurist shared reflections on his storied career, citing the intellectual and moral influence of figures such as Professor Wole Soyinka and Chief Obafemi Awolowo in shaping his path of courage and commitment.

By receiving this honour, Justice Ayo Salami joins a distinguished lineage of legal icons recognised by the Centre, including the late Supreme Court Justice Kayode Eso, who received the award in 2011.

The ceremony was witnessed by the recipient’s wife, Mrs. Olayinka Salami, alongside family members. The presentation marks a significant milestone in the WSCIJ’s 20th anniversary calendar, reinforcing the organisation’s commitment to integrity, fairness, and the protection of the civic space.
