The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) has honoured the outgoing Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Lagos, Michel Deelen, in recognition of his longstanding support for the Centre, his commitment to advancing investigative and accountability journalism, and his dedicated service to Nigeria.

The recognition was presented by Motunrayo Alaka, Executive Director/CEO of WSCIJ, during the 18th Wole Soyinka Annual Media Lecture Series. The ceremony followed a farewell discussion between the two regarding Deelen’s tenure in Nigeria, which began in 1999 at the dawn of the nation’s Fourth Republic.

Reflecting on his time in Nigeria, Deelen acknowledged the challenges of insecurity and economic instability but maintained an optimistic outlook on the nation’s democratic trajectory. He noted that it was laudable that Nigeria had maintained an uninterrupted democracy for twenty-seven years.

Beyond his professional work, Deelen shared a deep appreciation for the Nigerian experience. He expressed genuine admiration for the country’s vibrant culture, frequently noting his enjoyment of local cuisine and his visits to iconic tourist and cultural landmarks, such as the New Afrika Shrine. He emphasised that the boldness, strength, and entrepreneurial spirit of Nigerians are qualities that offer valuable lessons for Western nations.

Deelen further identified quality education as the cornerstone for addressing poverty, improving security, and fostering long-term economic development. To strengthen the media landscape, he called for increased cross-border collaboration among journalists and expressed strong confidence in the next generation of Nigerian reporters and their potential to shape the country’s future.

The award underscores the long term partnership between the Netherlands Embassy and the WSCIJ, particularly under the Civic Space Guard initiative, a collaboration which has yielded in the production of two editions of the Journalism and Civic Space Status report; Hushed Voices in an Election Year (2023) and Shrinking Freedoms (2024).

Deelen is set to transition to a new diplomatic assignment in Malaysia.
