As societies grapple with the rapid rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the intensifying climate crisis, and growing democratic pressures, the space for civic engagement is being tested in new and complex ways. At the heart of this moment is a critical question: how do we ensure that civic voices remain heard, protected, and impactful?

This edition will examine the intersection of technology, environmental realities and democratic governance and what these shifts mean for the media and civic space. It will explore how journalists, civil society actors and other stakeholders can collectively safeguard the public square and sustain open, inclusive, and accountable discourse.

The session will feature panellists including, Silas Jonathan, Research, and Digital Investigations Manager, Centre For Journalism Innovation And Development (CJID); Gbenga Sesan, Executive Director of Paradigm Initiative; Nanji Nandang, Investigative Reporter, International Centre for Investigative Reporting; Ayoola Kassim, Assistant Controller of Programmes/Environment Correspondent, Channels TV, and Mwanret Dimas, Legal Associate, Citizens’ Gavel. The discussion will be moderated by Kaladakoru Batubo, Broadcast Journalist, Bonny FM 90.9.

The conversation seeks to bring together diverse perspectives to interrogate emerging risks, share practical insights, and identify pathways for strengthening the role of the media in an evolving landscape.

The WSCIJ Journalism & Society Conversations is a platform for critical dialogue on the role of the media in society, locally and globally. It provides a space for experience sharing, reflection, and learning among journalists, civil society organisations, policymakers, researchers, students, and the public.
