The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) will publicly present a media justice status report on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in Nigeria on Wednesday 21 September 2022, titled ‘Missing data, missing justice’. The report, which is an activity under its 2021 Report Women! Female Reporters Leadership Programme (FRLP) funded by Open Society Foundation Africa, provides empirical evidence on SGBV issues as reported in the media and their status in the criminal justice process.
Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, professor of law and former United Nations Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons, will chair the event. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, a lawyer and Executive Director of Women Advocate Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC), will review the report. Benjamin Hundeyin, Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command; Chido Onumah, Coordinator, African Centre for Media and Information Literacy; Toun Okewale, Chief Executive Officer, Women Radio; Phil Nneji, Chairperson, International Federation of Women Lawyers, Lagos chapter among others are also billed to speak at the event.
The need to track the delivery of justice for survivors and victims of SGBV reported in the media necessitated this report. We hope that the report will stimulate conversations and actions among relevant stakeholders to improve the criminal justice framework and address the gaps observed in media reportage and the records of the police, court and individuals and organisations that intervene on the issues of SGBV.
Attendance at the virtual event is open to journalists, government ministries, departments and agencies; civil society organisations saddled with the protection of people against SGBV, human rights activists, gender advocates, representatives of security agencies and other relevant stakeholders.
Signed
