Call for Investigative Story Pitches: The Regulators Monitoring Programme (REMOP)

Application deadline: 30th May 2019

The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) invites Nigerian professional investigative reporters (full-time or freelance) from the print, online, broadcast and photography specialties to submit their story pitches for consideration for funding as part of the organisation’s Regulators Monitoring Programme (REMOP) supported by MacArthur Foundation.

REMOP is conceived as a media initiative geared at reporting the activities of regulators, including successes and failures, in a bid to promote proactive disclosure of information, transparency and accountability. REMOP seeks to take the best that media has to offer, coupled with the strength of civil society organisations, technical partners and non-governmental organisations to enable good governance in the country. The MacArthur Foundation supports the pilot phase of the programme with focus on the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), the agency responsible for regulating basic education in Nigeria, and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), which is the independent regulatory body responsible for the regulation of the electric power industry in Nigeria.

Journalists whose pitches are successful, will be invited to a one-day briefing in Lagos on modalities for executing the investigative story project. In addition, mentoring will be provided to selected journalists for a period of three months towards delivering impactful stories.

Tentative date for story briefing: Monday, 17 June 2019

Note

  • Applicants must have relevant works proving their dexterity at investigative reporting in the sectors under focus or other ones.
  • Journalists with story ideas on sectors other than basic education and electricity may be considered if they prove the relationship between their story, accountability and good governance.
  • To avoid loss of information please copy questions and answer on a separate sheet, then copy and past answers in the form and submit at once.
  • Female journalists are encouraged to apply.
  • Applicants living with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
  • Only shortlisted applicants will be contacted.
