To commemorate the 2023 International Day for Access to Information, the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) will host a Visual Realities Media Summit on Thursday, 28 September 2023, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm (WAT). The summit will feature experts discussing the theme, ‘Online space, access to information, and capturing social realities,’ with a focus on investigative photos, videos and cartoons. This virtual event, scheduled to hold on Zoom, aims to explore how investigative photos, videos and cartoons can leverage the opportunities and address challenges the digital space offers to capture and share social realities at scale.
A distinguished panel including Kolawole Oludare, Deputy Director, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP); Nelly Ating, freelance photojournalist; Sodiq Adelakun, photo editor, Channels TV; Mustapha Bulama, cartoonist, Daily Trust Newspaper; and Godwin Nwachukwu, Cameraman, TVC Communications, will discuss how visual journalists can perform their watchdog roles and hold individuals, organisations and governments accountable. Nabilah Usman, a journalist with Radio Now 95.3FM, will moderate the panel session.
WSCIJ’s Visual Realities initiative was launched in 2016 to develop the capacity of visual journalists to implement satirical, investigative and humorous cartoons. It also helps them understand and apply the knowledge of various social media tools to better engage on the issues their works address. Through the initiative, WSCIJ has helped photojournalists and cartoonists develop the capacity to tell compelling and impactful stories. In December 2016, the centre held ‘The Art of Cartoon: Imaging social realities’ while 18 photojournalists participated in the maiden edition of the Visual Storytelling Workshop in 2018.
The virtual event welcomes participation from government agency representatives, journalists, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), students, journalism educators, and the public.
