The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) on Wednesday, 17 October 2018 welcomed eight undergraduates from three Nigerian universities for a two-month internship programme.
The interns include Elizabeth Lawal from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria; Usman Bello Balarabe, Kabiru Ado and Hafsat Bello Muhammad from Bayero University Kano (BUK); Solomon Oladipupo, Adeboye Munirat, Ajagunna Juliana and Fadahunsi Olatosimifrom the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
The internship is an engagement under the Regulators’ Monitoring Programme (REMOP), which the Centre is implementing with support from the MacArthur Foundation, to keep an eye on regulators, particularly the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), which are the regulators charged with oversight function for basic education and electricity.
Motunrayo Alaka, the WSCIJ Coordinator said the internship is to deepen the interns’ understanding of issues related to basic education and electricity, especially in connection with media reportage and investigation of the sectors.
According to her, the interns will work on newspaper monitoring on education, electricity and gender issues; visit the newsroom; publish stories on basic education and or electricity; and undertake field work for story research among other tasks.
As part of the welcome, the interns were exposed to training on media monitoring for issues on basic education and electricity.
