WSCIJ collaborates with Open Ownership and EITI to promote accountability in the Nigerian extractive industries

The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) will partner with Opening Extractives (OE) programme to host a three-day residential workshop for investigative journalists and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) on beneficial ownership (BO) data and its usage in Abuja between 8 and 10 February 2023. The OE programme is an initiative of the Open Ownership (OO) and Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI). The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) will support the 2023 workshop.

The workshop will focus on the fundamentals of beneficial ownership, access to beneficial ownership data, interpretation of data and its impacts. The workshop will empower participants with the skills to use BO data for investigative reporting and advocacy, aiming to enhance the governance of energy and mining revenues. The goal is to combat corruption and reduce illicit financial flows within the Nigerian extractive industries.

Participants will also provide practical user-focused feedback for NEITI and the CAC on the options for strengthening high-quality data collection and improving the usefulness of data disclosures. It is expected that participants will launch more investigations and advocacy projects with improved collaborations after the event as they have broadened their network and engaged other stakeholders.
