Around the world, journalists are being watched. Some are harassed, others are silenced while many work under the shadow of surveillance technology and state-backed repression. As these threats grow more sophisticated, so must our collective response. On Sunday, 13 July 2025, at 5:00 p.m. WAT, the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) will convene the 17th Wole Soyinka Centre Media Lecture to confront these pressing challenges head-on.
At the heart of this conversation will be Angela Quintal, Africa Director at the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), who will deliver the keynote address. She will be joined by a distinguished panel including Quinn McKew, Executive Director of ARTICLE 19; Fisayo Soyombo, founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ); and Sonja Smith, Associated Press correspondent. The session will be moderated by Jimeh Saleh, former editor of the BBC/MacArthur Foundation investigative series.
As surveillance grows and civic space shrinks, this year’s lecture is not just a reflection, it is a call to action. Journalists, civil society leaders, policymakers, and concerned citizens are invited to join the conversation on Zoom, lend their voices, and recommit to defending the public’s right to know.
