The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) has virtually onboarded seven journalists for its Report Women! Champion Building project, which supports investigative story and leadership projects on women and girls’ right, on Monday, 25 August 2025.
The meeting introduced the project’s objectives, process, expectations, and timelines for the selected reporters to facilitate the successful execution of the activity.
The project supports investigative stories that expose abuse of power or systemic injustices against women and girls, challenge harmful policies or neglect by government and institutions, promote accountability in protecting women’s rights, and increase the presence of women and girls in the media through evidence-based reporting. It also seeks to investigate restrictions on women in political leadership and advance gender policies in media organisations.
The seven journalists taking part in the planned activity are Rakiya Muhammad, Multimedia Journalist, RM Times; Isaac Olufemi, Senior News Reporter, Splash105.5FM; Olufisoye Adenitan; Senior News Editor, Radio Nigeria (Positive FM) in Akure; Marie-Therese Nanlong, Reporter, Vanguard Newspaper; Hammad Abdulrasheed, freelance journalist, International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR); Juliana Francis, Publisher, Security News Alerts; and Justina Asishana, Niger State Correspondent, The Nation Newspaper/ASHENEWS.
The Champion Building project is part of the Report Women! News and Newsroom Engagement programme, which has been supported by the Gates Foundation since its launch in 2021, to improve parity between men and women in news and newsroom leadership.
