Benjamin Hundeyin, Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Police Command, has called on Nigerians to operate within the ambit of public decency and respect for the rights of others as they demand a more open civic space.
Hundeyin argued that the civic space in Nigeria has improved immensely amid calls for protection of fundamental human rights by state security agents. According to him, Nigeria has recorded giant strides in the protection of the civic space.
In his words: “I believe civic space has opened more than it used to be. Before now, this place would have been invaded by the Department of State Services (DSS) officers. If not invaded, by the time you are going out, people would be picked up. There was a time, people could not gather to express their minds.”
Commenting on cases of police brutality, Hundeyin said the global phenomenon is promoted by a few overzealous officers. He stressed that with only 0.5 per cent of cases
