As Nigeria marks 2025 Workers’ Day, the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) celebrates journalists for their role in safeguarding democracy and civic rights. This edition of our website features reflections from professionals across the news media spectrum to mark this day.
Please take this as your special invitation to join two of our upcoming virtual events. The first, which will be held on Zoom on Monday 5 May by 11am is themed ‘Can the press stay free in an AI driven world?’ to mark the 2025 World Press Freedom Day. The second is our regular WSCIJ’s Journalism and Society Conversations which will hold on Tuesday 13 May on the X platform.
We also highlight how we joined our partners, the Netherlands in Nigeria, to celebrate 2025 King’s Day; held a review meeting towards our annual Journalism and Civic Space Status Report; examined sustaining investigative journalism through local support and funding during our April edition of Journalism & Society Conversations; and hosted an intensive three-day training for our Female Report Women Reporters Leadership Programme Fellowship training.
Enjoy the read and we look forward to welcoming you on Zoom on Monday 5 May as we commemorate the World Press Freedom Day.
Signed,
Motunrayo Alaka
Executive Director/CEO, WSCIJ
