Photostory: Vaccine apathy in Abuja, hawkers, students refuse to wear face masks

The Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19 has issued some guidelines on how Nigerians can fight the pandemic, which includes non-pharmaceutical measures such as hand washing, physical distancing and the use of face masks.

However, the level of compliance has been a source of concern for stakeholders.

Residents of Abuja, the nation’s capital have been seen flouting these guidelines, which are backed by an Executive order signed by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

The PUNCH observed that in some schools in the FCT, the guidelines have been discarded, while hawkers completely ignore the precautions.

Meanwhile, the COVID-19 vaccination exercise elicited mixed reactions. While some Abuja residents got vaccinated, others failed to, claiming that since it’s not compulsory, it must not be important.

One reason residents are hesitant about getting vaccinated includes some of the recorded side effects, which include; headache, fever and dizziness.

At the clinics where the vaccinations are taking place, it was observed that some people complained of pain.

At every vaccination centre, The PUNCH visited, the health workers advised those vaccinated to wait a while before leaving the facility. They also advised them to rest and take painkillers in case of any complaint.

It must be noted that the first phase of the vaccination has closed with those who collected the first dose getting ready to receive their second and final jabs.
