Lagos is the epi-centre of the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria, also geographically the smallest of its thirty-six States – but the most densely populated State with over twenty million people. This makes handwashing a crucial part of the strategy to contain COVID-19. However, pipe borne water is a rarity in Lagos.
Since the index case of the COVID-19, Lagos has recorded over seventeen thousand cases with over two hundred deaths.
As part of effort to reduce the spread of coronavirus in the state, the government with the partnership of the private sector distributed over one hundred handwashing stations that come with soap and hand sanitizer dispensers, water tanks, and foot pedals – to key public places such as motor parks and hospitals.
Our correspondent Ruth King with the support of the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism, carried out an investigation into the maintainance of the hand washing stations.
