Call for application: Investigative stories on the justice status of sexual and gender-based violence cases

The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) invites Nigerian professional journalists (full-time or freelance) from all media specialties with a curious mind and interest in investigating the criminal justice status of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) cases to submit applications to participate in executing follow up investigative stories on reported and unresolved SGBV cases between 2018 and 2020. Application deadline is Thursday 11 November 2021 | 11:59pm (WAT).

Successful applicants will be mentored for one month. They will execute the stories as part of a Media Justice Status Report under WSCIJ’s 2021 Report Women! Female Reporters Leadership Programme (FRLP) focused on SGBV which is supported by the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA).

The overall objective is to amplify the role played by the criminal justice system in determining justice for survivors of SGBV. We hope to increase the awareness and engagement of stakeholders on SGBV and put conversations on SGBV and criminal justice on the front burner of national discourse to contribute to the increase in the chances of redress for survivors.

Interested journalists must have in depth investigative skills, knowledge of reporting violence against girls and women and experience in working with the criminal justice system in Nigeria. They must be energetic, have the tenacity to follow through on investigative cases.

Journalists with successful applications are required to attend a one-day virtual briefing on modalities for executing the investigative stories and adhere to the mentoring process.

Please note:

  • Attendance of the virtual briefing is mandatory once an application is successful
  • WSCIJ strongly encourages female journalists who live outside major cities to apply
  • Only shortlisted applicants will be contacted
