At the tenth Wole Soyinka Centre Media Lecture Series held in Lagos on Friday 13 July, in commemoration of the 84th birthday of Wole Soyinka, Africa’s first Nobel Laureate in Literature, Joe Abah, Nigeria Country Director, DAI Global, has called on government to address the various conflicts in the country.
Abah, who was Director-General of Bureau of Public Sector Reform called on the government to be more accountable to the Nigerian citizens. “Government must never forget that sovereignty belongs to the people of Nigeria, from where government derives all of its powers. That is what it says in our constitution”, he said.
Arguing that conflict brews when people feel that an injustice has been done and when poverty pervades the system, Abah urged the government to always act more swiftly to deal with issues of perceived injustice and move away from overreliance on oil and start to look at how to generate more wealth in the country.
He further urged the government to build more bridges, particularly across issues, communities and religions.
