About the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism

The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) is a non-governmental organisation with a vision to see a just, inclusive, transparent and accountable Nigeria stimulated by an ethical and sustainable media using the tool on investigative journalism. Initially known as the Wole Soyinka Investigative Reporting Award (WSIRA) at inception in 2005, the change in name became necessary in 2008 to reflect the intentions of the initiators to embrace a more robust line of activities that have greater capacity for engendering the right values of investigative journalism in the Nigerian media. The Centre is named after Professor Wole Soyinka in recognition of his life-long work in support of the freedom of expression, freedom to hold opinion, and freedom to impart them without fear or favour and without hindrance or interference.

Summary of positions

The WSCIJ is currently seeking to engage persons with passion for excellence and commendable work ethics to support its programme work spanning across various thematic issues. The ideal candidates will be expected to bring a combination of intellectual curiosity, interest in working with others, respect for the dignity of all human beings, ‘never‐say‐die’ spirit, love for veracity, and keen interest in the role of journalism for accountability in a democracy.

Duties/Competencies/Education and Experience for Interns:

Duties:

  • Enter source data into pre-tested media monitoring template
  • Support monitoring of newspapers for stories on various issues including education and electricity
  • Support content analysis of newspapers monitored
  • Take on other support roles as may be decided by the organisation

Competencies:

  • Possesses essential data entry skills— fast typing and an eye for detail
  • Fair grasps of the use of Microsoft packages especially excel and word
  • Ability to be discreet and manage sensitive information
  • Capacity to take initiative and work under pressure
  • Commendable interpersonal relationship and etiquette

Education and experience:

  • Proof of relevant education
  • Experience working in a similar role will be an added advantage

 

Duties/Competencies/Education and Experience for Programme Officer(s)

Duties:

  • Provide leadership input for WSCIJ’s strategic programme planning, development and implementation
  • Plan and execute activities to achieve programme objectives
  • Make concrete inputs for proposal/funding submissions and reports
  • Prepare and submit activity reports, meeting minutes and financial reports on regular basis as may be required
  • Execute project work plans and revise as appropriate to meet changing needs
  • Relate appropriately with key stakeholders within private, public and civil society sector in Nigeria and abroad
  • Perform monitoring and evaluation of activities
  • Set activity targets for team members and ensure those targets are met satisfactorily
  • Innovate alternative channels to disseminate WSCIJ’s message and showcase its work
  • Perform other roles as may be required by the organisation

Competencies:

  • Verifiable ability to lead and inspire others
  • Proven ability of proof reading, editing and designing of materials to be published
  • Demonstrated understanding of the media and its workings in relation to the Nigerian polity, regional trends and global affairs
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Ability to be discreet and manage sensitive information
  • Good Information Technology skills and ample grasps of the use of social media tools including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter and YouTube for public engagement
  • Capacity to take initiative and work under pressure with or without supervision
  • Relevant knowledge of the non-profit space in Nigeria and donor-funding opportunities to develop project proposals
  • Commendable interpersonal relationship and etiquette
  • Proficiency with the use of Microsoft packages especially excel and word
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and creative mind‐set
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse people, interests and issues
  • Ability to think outside the box
  • Readiness for travels (sometimes at short notice)
  • Ability to take on other tasks as may be decided by the organisation

Education and experience:

  • Proof of higher education and or experience
  • At least five years’ experience working in a similar role with a record of relevant accomplishments
  • Experience with driving project management cycle, that relate to the development sector
  • Excellent communication skills with evidence of good written and spoken English
  • Good appreciation of data journalism and its deployment
  • Experience working with a media focused non-governmental organisation will be regarded as additional merit
  • Journalism experience may be an advantage

WSCIJ remuneration and benefits are competitive with similar roles in the sector.
