Speakers advance ethical, need-based journalism for media sustainability

The Manging Director of News Central Media, Mr Kayode Akintemi says media organisations could be sustained through ethical Journalism and on the foundation of truth and accuracy.

He stated this during the Amplify In-depth Media (AIM) Conference & Awards, at Abuja Continental Hotel in Abuja with the theme: “The Independent Media Equation: Policies, Ownership, Technology and Sustainability.”

Akintemi emphasised the need to prioritise objectivity, accuracy and verification of their stories before publishing. He explained that every story should be subjected to scrutiny and verification before publication. Referring to Danbaba Danfulani Suntai, a former governor of Taraba state who was announced dead by most of the media organizations, while in critical condition in 2012.

Akintemi urged media organizations not to be in competition of breaking unverified stories, according to him, “it will help the public to trust the medium.”

In her submission, Tami Siri Banigo, Head of Strategy and Partnership, BusinessDay, said the media should meet the need of the audience by providing information appealing the young generation. She especially noted that the content of the print and electronic media should address the need of the audience.

“Be consistent with the style of writing and analysing your stories to attract the attention of your audience,” Banigo stated.

Subomi Plumptre, co-founder, Volition Capital Investments Ltd, advocated collaboration with tech companies and funding agencies to enable them to discharge their duties tolerably well. Plumptre urged media organizations to produce good content to get a financiers and patronage.
