Bimbo Oloyede received the Life Time Award for Journalistic Excellence in recognition of her substantive contribution to the development of broadcasting, narrating the convoluted history of our country with care, passion, and brilliance. She holds a beautiful place in the Nigerian broadcast history as the first woman to cast the Network News on the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC).
Her journey into the broadcast media started fourty years ago when many Nigerians who could afford to watch television tuned to the Network News at 7 on the then National Broadcasting Corporation, NBC now the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA to catch the latest news story making the waves. Bimbo Oloyede a favourite of many news lovers, read the news of the day as she helped make history. She has served in the capacity of assistant producer and also worked at the editor’s desk producing the news daily. In the course of her trade, she interacted with the likes of John Momoh, Bode Alalade and Julie Coker who were distinct broadcasters of their time.
In 1980 she retired from NTA but the call and love of broadcasting pulled her back to the microphone and she still anchors as newsreader and serve as instructor/mentor to young broadcasters at Channels TV. Mrs. Oloyede also serves as president of the Women’s Optimum Development Foundation (WODEF), an organisation that rewards the role of deserving women in the making of a better community.
